(Using the past continuous tense)

Usamos el tiempo pasado continuo para hablar de:

situaciones en un momento específico en el pasado

-We were working yesterday at 10.30 am.

-She was living in France in 2018.

situaciones que estaban ocurriendo al mismo tiempo en un momento pasado 

-My sister was cooking and I was watching TV.

-The teacher was speaking and we were listening to her.

una situación que estaba en desarrollo en el pasado y otra que la interrumpe (usamos while + pasado continuo / when + pasado simple)

While I was running in the park, my friend called me.

-Tom was cooking when he cut his finger.

*A tener en cuenta: Existe un grupo de verbos que no suelen usarse en pasado continuo en inglés. Estos verbos no indican acciones sino estados. Te dejo una [LISTA DE VERBOS DE ESTADO]

.Verbos que expresan estado y posesión: (ej: be, have, possess)

-He possessed a big fortune at that time.

He was  possessing a big fortune at thet time.

.Verbos que expresan percepción y sentidos: (ej: see, smell, taste)

-She was cooking and it smelled delicious.

-She was cooking and it was smelling delicious.

.Verbos que expresan sentimientos y preferencias: (ej: like, dislike, want)

-I wanted to live in the country when I a child.

I was wanting to live in the country when I was a child.

.Verbos que expresan actividades mentales: (ej: believe, understand, suppose)

-I didn’t understand that exercise.

I was not understanding that exercise.
